Volunteers play a big role at Granite Falls Municipal Hospital and Manor by participating with the residents in many programs. Terrie McCoss, is in charge of the Activities and Volunteer Program. She says, “Volunteers are essential for our programs. They assist with outings to the casino or Wal-Mart. They help with pontoon rides in the summer. They also help in house with bingo, games and work with our “vending machine on wheels—the Notion Cart”. We take the time to work with our volunteers’ schedule and match volunteers with residents. Sometimes the simple things, like reading to a resident or a social visit, uplift the spirits the most.”
According to research, older adults who volunteer have lower mortality rates than those who don’t. Having a reason to get up in the morning is important, whether that reason is watering a plant, feeding the dog, or donating your time to someone in need as a volunteer. If you combine that with the exercise and self-esteem boost volunteering can bring, it’s no wonder that volunteerism has been linked to a longer, fuller life.
Remember nothing is more golden than the heart of a volunteer-the genuine giving of spirit to help someone else. If you are interesting in volunteering your time, please contact Terrie McCoss at Granite Falls Municipal Hospital and Manor.
